Madrid: Valley’s Basilica and El Escorial Half Day Tour

The first stop on this 5-hour tour departing from Madrid is the El Escorial Monastery. It was built as a royal pantheon, monastery and seat of the Spanish kings during the reign of the powerful King Philip II.
It became a symbol of the great power of the Spanish Empire at the time. The monument was declared artistically and historically significant and entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The Valley of the Fallen was built in 1936, about 9 kilometers from the Escorial, as a memorial to those who died during the Spanish Civil War.
