The Arc de Triomphe is a Neoclassical homage to the triumphal arch style of ancient Rome. The view from the platform atop the arch, which stands fifty meters tall, is well worth the hike. The dozen Parisian avenues radiating out from the arch into the City of Light are worth seeing. Paris is one of the most fascinating cities in the world, and you’ll be right in the heart of it.
Napoleon commissioned the Arc de Triomphe shortly after his victory at Austerlitz, inspired by the great arches of ancient Rome. Regrettably, he did not live to see it completed.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, located at the base of the arch, pays tribute to the 1.3 million French soldiers who died in World War I.
It’s worth climbing the 284 stairs for the view from the top of the arch. Unlike the obligatory trip to the Eiffel Tower, getting into the Arc de Triomphe requires some effort. Plus, with skip-the-line tickets, you won’t have to stop to catch your breath on your way in.
