The cave is a natural cavity in the rock with paintings from 35,600 years ago and represents one of the most important pictorial and artistic cycles of prehistoric paintings in the world.
This village is one of the most famous cultural and tourist centres of Cantabria. You will enjoy walking through the cobbled streets until you reach the Plaza Mayor, where you will see the Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana. There, you will visit the museum of the local sculptor Jesús Otero. You will then have some free time to visit the Collegiate if you wish and do some shopping in the area.
Afterwards, you will head to the Altamira Museum. This museum houses a scaled-down replica of the "picture room", the so-called Neocave. This cave was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. To protect its conservation, only 5 people a week are currently allowed to visit, so they created this replica cave.
