In the early tenth century, Abd al-Rahman III, the Umayyad caliph of Córdoba, ordered the construction of Madinat al-Zahra, or “brilliant city” in Arabic.
Located approximately 8 km from Córdoba, this stunning array of elaborate structures and monuments was built as a testament to the power of the Caliph against his adversaries. They also functioned as official government structures.
