About Doi Inthanon National Park

Doi Inthanon National Park is one of Thailand’s most celebrated natural attractions, known for its fresh mountain air, rich wildlife, lush forests, and breathtaking scenery. Highlights of the park include impressive waterfalls, panoramic viewpoints, the famous Twin Royal Pagodas, and Thailand’s highest point. Due to the cooler temperatures at higher elevations, visitors are advised to bring warm clothing.

Often referred to as “The Roof of Thailand,” the park is located about 70 km southwest of Chiang Mai city and spans an area of 482 square kilometers. Elevations range from 800 to 2,565 meters above sea level, with cooler and more humid conditions throughout the year, especially near the summit.

Doi Inthanon is a favorite destination for nature lovers, offering opportunities for waterfall visits, short nature trails, birdwatching, scenic viewpoints, remote hill-tribe villages, and sunrise or sunset viewing. The climate remains relatively cool year-round, particularly at higher altitudes.

The park is named after King Inthawichayanon, one of the last rulers of Chiang Mai, who was deeply committed to forest conservation in northern Thailand. In accordance with his wishes, his remains were placed in the area, and the forest was later named in his honor.

The park’s diverse ecosystem includes cloud forests, sphagnum bogs above 1,800 meters, and lower-elevation forests such as pine, evergreen, mixed deciduous, teak, and dipterocarp forests.

The rainy season runs from May to October, with the heaviest rainfall typically between July and September. From November to February, the weather is generally drier and noticeably cooler.
