Full Description
Get admission tickets to the Jerónimos Monastery, a national landmark close to Lisbon that is included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover how the monastery was established in 1496 by King Manuel I as a tribute to the Infante for his faith in St. Jerome and devotion to Our Lady.
Admire the Portuguese Late Gothic or Manueline architecture once you're inside. Find out how the Order of St. Jerome monks received the monastery of St. Mary of Belém as a donation. It is hence frequently referred to as the Jerónimos Monastery. After the order was disbanded in 1833, the monastery served as an orphanage and school until 1940. During the 19th century, the cathedral served as a memorial for poets and local heroes like Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões.
