Enjoy a wonderful day at the Rijksmuseum, one of Amsterdam's most prestigious museums, which is situated in the center of the city and has an internationally renowned collection that includes some of the most well-known pieces in the country, including historic works by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Van Gogh, and others. Rembrandt's "The Night Watch" is on display in a beautifully lit hall that allows visitors to appreciate every little detail. You can also gaze upon "The Jewish Bride," which brought Vincent van Gogh to tears. After visiting the Rijksmuseum shortly after it opened, van Gogh wrote in a letter that he would gladly give up ten years of his life to spend two weeks sitting in front of the painting, eating only a stale crust of bread. Expect much more than just paintings by Golden Age Dutch Masters; the Rijksmuseum's expansive evocative collection also includes Delftware, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, clothing, Asian art, prints, items from Dutch maritime history, and many other culturally significant objects. Of course, the collection isn't stuck in a time capsule; new pieces, like a 1965 dress by Yves Saint Laurent that was inspired by Mondrian, can also be seen, and the largest research and restoration project ever for "The Night Watch" has begun.
