Full Description

The iconic Rijksmuseum de Gevangenpoort is located on the Hofvijver and is a landmark in The Hague. During the 13th century, this structure served as the Binnenhof's imposing entrance. A few centuries later, it was used as the powerful Hof van Holland's courthouse and prison. Defaulters were imprisoned here, and suspected criminals awaited their trial. Currently, the Museum de Gevangenpoort narrates the fascinating tale of crime and punishment in the past.

You can observe and feel how people were tried, incarcerated, and punished in the past here. Which cells were they detained in? Did wealthy and impoverished inmates vary from one another? Where was their verdict heard? What penalties were imposed? On a tour with our guide, you will learn everything there is to know about it. This location was the scene of several significant events in Dutch history, including the murder of the De Witt brothers. The museum also displays the nation's collection of torture and punishment tools.
