Full Description

Carcassonne was first settled as early as the 6th century BC and later developed into an important Roman town. It was fortified during the 4th century and became a strategic location in the Middle Ages. In the 13th century, the city took on its defining form when the king ordered the construction of the distinctive double-walled ramparts and the expansion of the castle.

After suffering damage during the Cathar Crusade (1209–1229), the exile of the Trencavel family, and the activities of the Inquisition, the site fell into ruin. In 1844, the French state commissioned architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc to restore the city of Carcassonne. The restoration was completed in 1911 by his student Paul Boeswillwald, returning the royal fortress to its former appearance. The site was later recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

With this self-guided ticket, visitors can explore the castle courtyards, archaeological museum, and defensive ramparts. You can walk along the galleries and fortified walls while enjoying views from the medieval western ramparts and discovering centuries of military architecture and history.
